HOW TO TEARDOWN APPLE M1, M2, and OTHER MACBOOK COMPUTERS, WINDOWS PC LAPTOP COMPUTERS, and XBOXONE GAME SYSTEMS TO REMOVE MICROPHONES, CAMERAS, WIFI and BLUETOOTH

By having microphones and cameras in your Apple MacBook, Windows PC, or game systems, “cyber criminals” (including government organizations) can hack your internet, wifi, or bluetooth to overhear, watch, and monitor you, or even interfere with your online and physical activity in a harassing or terroristic manner. Everyone is still familiar with wired headphones and microphones – use them. And always turn off location services for the entire computer or other device and every app. You are better off by accessing the internet via ethernet connection to a computer, game system, or other streaming device such as Apple TV (no wifi or bluetooth). This protects you from wireless security vulnerabilities as well as excessive levels of cancer-causing radiation emitted by wifi and bluetooth technology. Note, you must be willing to “teardown” / take apart your Apple Macbook Windows PC, or XBOX game system in order to disconnect or remove microphones, cameras, wifi and bluetooth, and to do so (with most devices) requires specialized tools which can be purchased from “IFixIt.com” or at a Micro-Center storefront.

How To Disconnect or Remove Microphones and Cameras From Apple MacBook M1, M2, and Other MacBook Computers:

Remove the rear panel.
Disconnect the battery flex connector and battery terminal bolt (you will have to slightly lift the terminal bar to disconnect the battery – place a piece of electrical tape on the bar to avoid any electrical connection).
Disconnect the microphone (right side of the motherboard when facing up with the computer turned over). This applies to Apple MacBook M1 and M2 laptop computers. Cover the flex connector port with a small piece of electrical tape.
Disconnect the camera flex connector (top of the motherboard). Alternatively, you can cover over the camera with a piece of tape or purchase a cover. This applies to Apple MacBook M1 and M2 laptop computers. Cover the flex connector port with a small piece of electrical tape.
How To Remove Wifi and Bluetooth Chip From Apple M1 or M2 MacBook Laptop Computers:

Note, this requires you to remove the entire motherboard to access the bottom side of it where the wifi / bluetooth chip is located, and removes airplay capability as well since airplay is done through the wifi / bluetooth chip. Also, by disconnecting the screen, when you plug this flex connector back in and turn on your MacBook laptop computer you will notice a multi-colored bar across the top of the screen on your home screen. This is normal and happens no matter what if the screen is disconnected and/or ever replaced. To rid yourself of this distracting eye-sore, change your computer background to black. This has no effect on applications whatsoever, just the home screen (until it is changed to black).

Disconnect all flex connectors from the motherboard.
Remove all fastening screws (keep them organized to put back).
Remove the motherboard from the computer frame.
Flip the motherboard over and locate the wifi / bluetooth chip soldered into the motherboard (it is silver and is the only chip soldered diagonally at the top left of the motherboard when flipped over).
Using electrical tape and paper or plastic, cover the entire motherboard (except for the wifi / bluetooth chip) to keep debris from getting onto the motherboard.
With a Dremel and metal circular grinding attachment, gently grind off the wifi / bluetooth chip. The objective is to remove all of the silver and underlying grey material from the motherboard. When you start to see exposed copper, you have removed all of the chip. Do not be concerned if you see copper, but do not continue grinding into the copper (as you risk damaging the motherboard).
Clean off the exposed area with a paper towel or q-tip with rubbing alcohol – let dry.
Cover the area where you removed the chip with electrical tape.
Reinstall your motherboard by flipping it back over and angling into the MacBook frame, fastening with original screws.
Excluding the battery, reconnect flex connectors (except for the microphone and camera flex connectors).
Reconnect the battery terminal bolt and flex connector.
Turn on your Mac computer and continue use as normal.

How To Remove Microphones, Cameras, Wifi and Bluetooth Chip From Windows PC Laptop Computers:

Remove the rear panel.
Disconnect the battery flex connector and any battery terminal (if applicable).
Separate the top of the screen from its frame with a “I Fix It” “putty knife” tool and/or plastic picks or a razor blade (the camera and microphone are located behind the screen).
Disconnect the microphone flex connector and/or physically remove the microphone with a I Fix It “putty knife” or razor blade if no flex connector is present. It is also possible that the microphone and camera are soldered as one removable unit.
Disconnect the camera flex connector (and remove the camera if desired). Alternatively, you can cover over the camera with a piece of tape or purchase a cover.
With some PCs the wifi / bluetooth chip is mounted with screws and a flex connector cable to the motherboard rather than being soldered into the motherboard as part of it. In this case, you can locate the mounted chip, disconnect it, and leave the chip mounted or unscrew it and dismount from the motherboard. For other (perhaps newer) PCs, you will have to conduct your own research to identify the soldered wifi / bluetooth chip and disconnect or remove accordingly (similar to the process above with Apple MacBook M1 and M2 laptop computers).

How To Remove Wifi / Bluetooth Chip from XBOXONE Game Systems (original)

Note, if you intend to use your XBOXONE for online gaming, this will require that you use an ethernet cord to access the internet. Also, this will eliminate your ability to use XBOXONE controllers wirelessly. However, this walkthrough does not include the removal of microphones because without wireless capability or accessing the internet, removing microphones is less necessary. It is up to you as the user to decide how to get satisfactory use out of your XBOXONE. There are plenty of games that do not require internet, although for many newer games internet connection and a Microsoft Live account is required. If you intend to continue online gaming, you would be best protected by doing the research and removing microphones from your XBOX game system and/or XBOX wireless controller(s).

Remove the side panels (vents)
Unscrew and remove the top panel.
Locate the wifi / bluetooth chip mounted to the top of the frame (similar to older Windows PC computers). Disconnect the flex connector, unscrew and remove the wifi / bluetooth chip.

While this walkthrough does not cover every computer or game system, it is a proven guide that presents a solid foundation as to how to approach disconnecting or removing microphones, cameras, wifi and bluetooth from many devices since manufacturing processes are similar across brands and motherboards. For example, whether it’s a laptop, desktop, game system, remote controller, or any other technology device with a microphone, the microphone itself is a small rectangular piece of gold metal (either attached to the motherboard or connected via flex connector cord) that can be disconnected or physically pried away with a I Fix It tool or razor blade. Just be sure to remove all of the gold and/or silver solder material down to the motherboard as well. The same applies to wifi and bluetooth chips – you just have to locate it by researching your motherboard’s diagram online to identify which chip it is.
